Discover Granville, a jewel between land and sea
Ideally nestled in the heart of the historic Upper Town, Maison du Cap Lihou is your gateway to the treasures of Normandy. From this charming residence, the iconic Mont Saint-Michel is easily accessible, and a short one-hour ferry crossing will take you to the magnificent Chausey Islands archipelago.
A historic setting and seascapes
Stroll through a listed historical monument, a maze of picturesque alleyways winding along imposing ramparts. At every turn, be surprised by breathtaking ocean views. For a unique perspective, embark on a boat trip in the bay and admire from the sea the fortifications that bear witness to Granville's past as a former privateering port.
Escape to Chausey, the archipelago with a thousand facets
Treat yourself to a getaway to the Chausey Islands, the largest granite archipelago in Europe. Here, the landscape is shaped by the continent's most powerful tides, reaching an amplitude of nearly 14 meters. At low tide, a string of rocky islets is revealed, linked by vast sandbanks, offering opportunities for unique hikes. Legend has it that there are as many islands as there are days in the year at low tide, and as many as there are weeks at high tide... see for yourself!
An 8km coastal path allows you to explore the main island on foot, taking you from the fishing village of Blainvillais to the Renault castle, passing by the home of the painter Marin-Marie.
A cultural and artistic effervescence
Nicknamed "The Monaco of the North," Granville is a vibrant art town. Stroll through its many galleries, visit the Richard Anacréon Museum of Modern Art, or discover the world of the famous couturier at the Christian Dior Museum. In the summer, the town comes alive with festivals, such as "Mission on the Roc," and baroque and organ concerts that resonate in the unique atmosphere of Notre-Dame du Cap Lihou Cathedral.
The call of the open sea and maritime traditions
Sea lovers and fans of traditional sailing ships will be in their element. Granville is home to the MARITÉ, the last French three-masted Newfoundland fishing vessel, which offers unforgettable excursions in the bay or towards Chausey. For a more exhilarating sailing experience, climb aboard the GRANVILLAISE, a bisquine, the town's iconic sailing fishing boat. With a bit of luck, the captain might even let you take the helm for an authentic and powerful sailing adventure.
The pleasures of swimming and the spectacle of the tides
Two beaches are available: the famous Plat Gousset beach, near the casino (15 min walk), and the more secret North beach, accessible in 5 minutes by a stone staircase from the rampart path.
Warning: here, the tides dictate the swimming schedule! Remember to consult the tide tables. At low tide, you sometimes have to walk to reach the water, while at high tide, the beach can disappear completely.
This natural phenomenon offers a magnificent spectacle. At low tide and with a high tidal coefficient, the sea recedes for kilometers, revealing a paradise for those who enjoy fishing on foot. Conversely, during high and windy tides, the sea rages along the promenade, hurling immense plumes of water against the seawall. A striking and invigorating scene!
